Caroline List
A Masters graduate from Chelsea School of Art and Design in Painting, List is well known for her landscapes evoked from memories and photographs. Her work explores the physicality of painting in relation to memory, artifice and the photographic trace. Her paintings are neither grounded in reality or fiction, but are fragmented somewhere between the two.
Her new paintings often have an historical reference such as Lord Byron’s Garden (Newstead Abbey) or Flatford Mill, where Constable painted the Hay Wain. The paintings play with notions of romantic landscape referencing high and low genres, and often set within perfect landscapes, un-peopled, like Capability Brown’s gardens of the 18th century perfectly composed for our viewpoint, seamlessly disguising the influences of man within the landscape.
She was recently nominated for the Bryon Robertson painting prize.
