Wayne Warren
Cultural detritus forms the focus of Wayne Warren’s conceptualist work. Nuts, bolts, scissors, old toys and mobile phones are just some of the discarded objects that he brings together in his latest frieze-like sculpture, and coats with gold. The slender object has a dual, conflicted impact. Horizontally, it is reminiscent of the continuous stream of items churned out by factory production lines every day. In cross-section, the fixed layers of detritus call to mind fossil layers in the earth’s crust, asserting modernity’s place within a far larger history.
Warren’s “Nothing” series of sculptural and two-dimensional works puts a seemingly empty notion at centre stage. Their humorous claims that something can be made of nothing are underwritten by wider and deeper philosophical concerns, echoing the ancient ideas of the 5th-century Greek philosopher Permenides.
