Westerholt’s work sits on the cutting edge of the contemporary crossover between fashion, craft and fine art. At first sight, her hand stitched samplers seem to be the typical cosy, homely mid-Western heirloom, with all the American colonial motifs painstakingly stitched into place. However, what would once have been biblical or moral refrains become pop cultural quotations drawn from films, hip-hop, and general Generation X vernacular, undermining the assumed wholesomeness of American traditional values and at the same time questioning the longevity of today’s consumer culture.
Her distinctive humorous approach has led to a commission for Vogue, Blingin’ Innit, in July 2006 and has put Westerholt’s work in numerous collections, including Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn.
