Katsutoshi Yuasa
Katsu makes woodcut prints, which are based on his own photographs of rural areas and cityscapes. His works are momentary snapshots of how the artist sees the world captured in a traditional native art form - the woodcut. The act of trying to grasp a transient moment holds more meaning to Katsu than the act of observation, as he believes there is a difference between the scientific fact and the empirical truth. The difference is crystallized into the work through the reflection of the selected image. Since graduating from RCA in 2006, he has undertaken four international residencies including the Rijksakademie, Amsterdam, Kala Art Institute, Berkeley, and Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris. Yuasa’s first London solo exhibition was held in 2009 at The Daiwa Foundation, Japan House in collaboration with TAG Fine Arts.
