Gigi Cifali

Cifali trained as a topographer in Naples but ultimately pursued photography as a way of documenting the vibrant, kaleidoscopic subject of the cityscape. Since moving to the UK he has completed courses in documentary photography and photojournalism, and now works as an editorial photographer. Cifali’s project, ‘The Absence of Water,’ documents derelict lidos and baths in England, charting their fall from Victorian symbols of civic and architectural pride, to empty remnants of a bygone era. The accompanying soundtrack recaptures a lively, spirited atmosphere that is conspicuously absent in Cifali’s frozen images and the silent, vacant buildings themselves.
