Matteo Negri creates morphological sculptural re-workings of everyday items. He steers deliberately clear of realism, experimenting instead with the communicative potential of an object’s structure, pattern, texture and geometry. Negri’s enlarged Lego sculptures look back to a childhood spent playing with the popular building blocks, but he uses them now to build his own subversive artworks. Some pieces echo high-brow, fine art compositions by the likes of Mondrian, while others literally bend the rules, knotting the traditionally rectangular, solid Lego blocks into unexpected new shapes. Negri’s work combines childhood and adulthood, imagination and reality.
