The Gentle Author's Tour of Spitalfields - Celebrated figures from past and present appear across this map of one of London's most historic enclaves, as described in the writings of the pseudonymous Gentle Author of Spitalfield Life.
Originally settled by the Romans, the discovery of the tomb of a noble Roman girl buried wearing expensive silk garments coincidentally provides a thread to the Huguenot silk weavers, who thrived in the same neighbourhood centuries later.
Created to underpin a walking tour of Spitalfields which weaves through the ghost worlds of the Romans, Huguenots, medieval plague victims, victorian costermongers, Jewish and Bangladeshi diaspora and the recently dissipated Brit-Art scene, this cartographic encapsulation of a neighbourhood in time updates the previous 'Map of Spitalfields Life' as a living historical terrain.
