Adam Dant’s striking new map is an illustrated tour of 17th Century London during the civil war. It is an intriguing lesson in one of the most fascinating periods in London’s long history. Depicted in the map are many famous and infamous locations of interest during the conflict. Forts and strongholds surround the city – with names that are recognisable today - thus Brick Lane Fort, Hide Park Fort and Vauxhall Fort amongst others. We see Clerkenwell Close where Oliver Cromwell lived, Somerset House where his body lay in state, Westminster Abbey where he was initially buried, and Westminster Hall where his posthumously exhumed head was displayed on a pole. Also depicted are Banqueting House where Charles I was executed and many other protest sites, prisons, meeting places and final burial sites.
