Discover 'Feast' by Tobias Till
Introducing Tobias Till's masterfully made new edition 'Feast', all about the fanciful language of finance! Inspired by the relationship between financial slang and food, Tobias has created this chaotic, lavish scene, full of visual puns and hidden details!
Tobias Till | Feast | 2025 | Lino and polymer relief print on radiant white Somerset Satin paper | Signed and editioned by the artist | Edition of 50 | 84 x 160 cm | £3,000 (unframed)
Using both lino and polymer relief printing processes, Tobias was able to create an intricately drawn scene, layered with bold colours and subtle textures, with phrases, puns, and well-known proverbs weaved throughout. The process of creating this work is so involved, with each line hand-drawn and carved by Tobias, that batches of prints can take around 4 weeks to complete! Each printed layer must dry completely before the next can be printed, to ensure that every last detail is maintained.
The composition details historical events, such as 'tulip mania' when the Dutch bulb market boomed in the 1630's, and explores global etymology - "currency" from the Latin "currere", meaning 'to run', and "flying money", the Chinese slang for paper notes.
The Dutch still-life genre is also referenced by a half-peeled lemon sitting on the lace tablecloth, a signature inclusion of 17th Century Dutch still-life painting. The fruit would often appear next to wine glasses, as lemon rinds were popular garnishes at the time, and perhaps because their bright yellow tones contrasted well with the metal platters and kitchenware. Lemons were also a sign of wealth and status due to importation from afar, so being front and centre in the paintings of artists like Willem Claesz Heda and Abraham van Beyeren further emphasised the lavishness of their still-life scenes!
Each seemingly straightforward expression is exposed for how strange it really is using humorous visual puns; notably, a lurking snake hisses 'Faang Stocks', and the 'Dog of the Dow' peers over the dining table with it's 'Governor's eyebrow'.
We were thrilled to start 2025 by launching 'Feast' at the London Art Fair, and subsequently exhibiting it at AAF Battersea Spring and the London Original Print Fair's 40th Edition alongside 'Oranges and Lemons'!
