For this installment of In The Studio, we took a peek into Claire Brewster's studio, where she showed us her work station filled with inspiration and works in progress, and explained the conceptual reasons behind her artistic decisions!

Do you find it helpful to put your work up on the wall like this in your studio?

Yeah, some things just work immediately, and then other things you have to look at for a while.

Do the maps you use correlate to the different flowers and birds you choose for your pieces?

It depends. I play around with what the bird looks like on the map, quite often it will be colour related. I suppose I go on flights of fancy... Often I try to find a map that captures the sense of the flowers or birds.

Why do you work with maps?

We can all connect with maps, I connect with maps. I find it fascinating how the world changes, the idea that humans try to plot the world, when really the world is always changing.  A printed map is always out of date, even before it's been published, as the world is in constant flux and change. I use them with birds and nature, because nature doesn't really respect maps. Birds travel wherever they travel, they're not really controllable. Maps are our human need to control things.

I don't always cut out everything I've planned, I sometimes change it as I go along. I like the idea that, although they're often repetitions of the same birds, they're all slightly different.

Do you find it quite relaxing to work in this way?

If I'm doing a lot of it, it's almost like I've been asleep. I just get very lost in it, and then it's almost like I do wake up when I stop.
