Riding the wave of success at the San Francisco Art Fair, our local San Fran artist Michael Azgour welcomed us into his sunny studio space last week!

 

Michael's paintings explore the relationship between modern observational and landscape painting, and the digital image. Stepping into Michael's studio is like stepping into his mind - his studio reflects his deep engagement with the presence of photography in shaping the individual experience, evident in the powerful geometric abstractions that cover the walls.

 

 

Michael's artistic process creates a surface that at once seems pixel-like and fluid. Figures are repeated and distorted, as if the scene has glitched and frozen, the static blocks of colour adding to this effect. It was great to get a peek at what Michael is currently working on, including paintings in progress, digital inspirations, and sketches! 

 

 

Michael is also currently exhibiting a collection of his works in 'Image as Mythology', as part of his joint exhibition 'PIXELS' with Michael F. Rhode, at the Fresno Art Museum!

"The works in this exhibition are part of an ongoing body of figurative paintings by artist Michael Azgour and his studio which incorporate hard-edge geometric abstractions (or “pixels”) with expressive representational paint application. The resulting images are in flux between that which signifies something else and that which is an end in itself. The viewer is invited to engage with the works and in doing so to take part in completing the work." - Fresno Art Museum
