The 256th Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2024 opens next week, so it's time for Varnishing Day! Congratulations to all the artists that have successfully entered the world's oldest open submission exhibition! More artworks from our artists featured are available on our website!

Varnishing Day was historically the day for exhibiting artists to celebrate the beginning of the Summer Exhibition, add any finishing touches to their work, and varnish it! This year's exhibition, 'Making Space', has been coordinated by Ann Christopher RA, who gave us a lovely reading of Kae Tempest's 'Let Them Eat Chaos' at the Service for Artists.

Here's a sneak peek of this year's show, featuring our exhibiting artists and their works in Rooms 7 & 8, curated by Anne Desmet RA!

Katsutoshi Yuasa's woodcuts 'A Place for Everyone' and 'The Voice of Stone' join over 1,200 artworks in the Royal Academy this year! Katsutoshi's masterful hand-carved woodcuts push the possibilities of this traditional printmaking technique, incorporating digital methods and photography to create atmospheric, cinematic images of everyday life.

We will soon be releasing a brand new woodcut series from Katsutoshi, celebrating this year's 60th Venice Biennale, so stay tuned!

Adam Dant with his pieces 'Slow London' and 'Hanover Square'! If you can't read all the stories on the tortoise's shell, take a look at it's counterpart, 'The London History Tortoise' on our website!

While you're at the Royal Academy, make sure you pop across the courtyard to The Society of Antiquaries, for Adam's new exhibition 'The Reign' with Dan Llywelyn Hall, as part of London Art Week! Adam will be showing 9 new works 'Origin Myths of the City of London' - more info below!

Susan Aldworth's fascinating monotypes 'Modern Alchemy 9a and 10b' have been hung together! Both are from her project Modern Alchemy: towards a more sustainable chemistry, in collaboration with Dr. Amanda Jarvis, Edinburgh University. In response to Dr. Jarvis' goal of developing a more sustainable catalytic chemistry, Susan used cheaper steel plates for etching, and worked with chemicals to achieve a vivid visual record of catalysis. One such chemical, Aqua Regia, was historically used by alchemists to dissolve gold; Susan's use of gold leaf is also a nod to this alchemy.

Yanko Tihov with his 'London Passport Map 2024' the latest in his London series, which acknowledges and  celebrates all of the diverse cultures that make up the city of London! Up and ready for the opening!

Felicity Warbrick's 'Museum Venus de Milo' and 'Watchtower'. two original monotype drawings from Felicity's 'House series. Both pieces exemplify the sense of atmosphere and weight that can be achieved with a limited colour palette and purposeful, considered composition.

Excitingly, Lawrie Hutcheon is debuting a brand new piece 'Pandora's Box' in this year's exhibition. Here's a little teaser alongside some lovely complimentary ice cream! If you're lucky enough to be in Ibiza, Lawrie is currently featured in the inaugural exhibition season of In-Between Ibiza, 23 Plaça de Vila, Dalt Vila.
