Suman Kaur

Suman Kaur is the winner of BBC’s Big Painting Challenge 2017. A hugely talented painter who, according to the show’s judges, is “a great artist in the making”.

For some time art had been just a hobby for Suman, but her best friend encouraged her to enter the competition, which she eventually won in March of this year. This is the first time her work has been available for sale.

Suman lives in Leeds, and paints in a converted studio at her parent’s house. Specialising in portraits, landscapes and still-lives, she uses a combination of paint and unorthodox media in her pieces, including shoe polish, coffee and charcoal. Her technique of building layers and texture adds a huge amount of complexity and character to the images.

Suman says of her work “The themes in my work tend to vary but for the most part I love to experiment with layers of human psyche and expression as well as contrasts of texture to create form.”
