Kate Lewis
Kate Lewis seamlessly weaves news and nature into captivating botanical collages. Following her Master’s degree from the Royal College of Arts in 1999, she has gained prominence as a textile designer for luxury brands in New York and Paris. In 2018, she began dissecting newsprint and transforming sentences into delicate creations inspired originally by cherry blossoms. This approach transformed news stories into timeless pieces, inviting viewers to explore current events from a fresh perspective, and reshaping historical events into a floral narrative. The bees emerged from the words, seeking solace from news-induced anxiety. To redefine storytelling, merging news and nature into works that celebrate the human experience.
For her newest series 'Embellished Notifications', Kate is exploring embroidery and textiles practices through paper, using raffia and perforated paper to reinterprt the digital notifications we all receive daily. The 'embellished' pieces take corporate messages, like app notifications and spam, messages designed to provide instant gratification, and display them as hand-stitched works providing long lasting joy, subverting their impersonal natures through traditional practices.
